As a content creator I am used to writing about my own experiences and sharing my insights with the people who follow me. This past week I took an intentional step back from my own content creation to listen, read and learn about systemic racism in the United States and to explore and unpack my privilege. I resisted the impulse to put words to my own thoughts or publicly process current events in lieu of learning how to be a good ally in other ways.
This was much needed and I’m so grateful for everyone who used their expertise and experiences to skillfully curate and share critical information on their social channels.
Social Media is an incredibly powerful tool. I was so proud to observe a segment of people that I follow step up this week and lead the charge through digital activism. In most cases, these are individuals who are not regular content creators. In most cases these are individuals who are quiet but eager listeners. Watching them use their voices and express themselves through digital activism was powerful.
Here is a brief, non-linear and most certainly inadequate recap of things that moved me this past week within my industry and larger BLM movement.
